What happened to me – I bought an Apple Pencil along with a pre-order for an iPad Pro. I figured I can leave the Apple Pencil in it’s box until the iPad Pro arrives. I also made it clear that if I was going to be charged an extra fee for covering the Apple Pencil, that I’ll return the lot and rebuy it, avoiding the $29 charge. This way I don’t think they could see a problem, as Apple can see on it’s system the devices I own and when they were bought – the iPad Pro was bought the same day I called them to add the Apple Care to the Apple Pencil. No other devices I own are compatible with the Apple Pencil, there’s no reason I would of opened and used it. If you bought your Apple Pencil 3+ weeks ago and everything is out of the box, I’d still give Apple a call and see if they’ll extend your AppleCare warranty.
